My world is built up from thousands of carefully placed objects and materials sourced from my own childhood belongings, donations of old ‘treasures’ from friends and neighbours and many, many visits to second-hand shops. I have created a 3d sculpture of a world consisting of my memories, hopes and life experiences. I started by selecting objects that help illustrate different stories and memories. At the base of the world, a multitude of stories tell of life and death, war and peace, fun and laughter, in earthy colours of blue, green, brown and black. Towards the centre, a volcano emerges, built up of brightly coloured, sparkling and humorous objects and characters, at the centre of which is my resting place, where a clay figure of myself lays feeling satisfied and content in the safety of this world. Animal and insect species and fantasy creatures are prominent throughout this piece and act as guards protecting my world. This is in reference to one of the most magical periods of my life, when I spent 5 years living isolated in a tent studying wild chimpanzee behaviour. My world offers hope, a balance of power and a place of happiness and aims to offer the viewer hours of discovery.
